A Child of Broken Faith

In Coerthas Western Highlands, born a son of a minister, Acqua's beginnings were quickly tumbled into quiet isolation. His father claimed that Acqua was supposed to be a prophet, even castrated himself to follow an old, mis-translated scripture to prove his loyalty and devotion. However, at the death of Acqua's mother during childbirth, and a terrible ice storm the following night, the zealot off-shoot religion started to doubt their minister's validity.As struggling ministers do, Acqua's father conveniently translated a new scripture that settled Acqua into a new, shunted position out of view, and remarried not two weeks later.For his first ten years, Acqua served the covenant well and quickly learned that silence was holy. He ate devotion and buried his voice. Often alone and shuttered away, he found comfort in scriptures and tomes. He didn't know how to need.He went through rigorous healing training to serve the covenant and was taught to become an accomplished potion's master at a young age. Potions was one of the local ways the covenant made funds, so to have him able to not only add to labor, but exceed it, was it's own blessing in their eyes.Like the the eventuality of many cults, doubts and questions gradually began to arise among the covenant, and slowly the bonds of their unity began to chip away. Acqua's step-mother was the one to finally put a stop to it before she was to be put to blame and chaos erupted. She gave a potion recipe to Acqua and told him to give it to his father. She claimed it was a sleeping draught as his father was having difficulties sleeping.Acqua was too intelligent with alchemy to know what the potion was, but the holy step-mother instructed him to the task, so he accomplished it without question. At ten years old, he watched his father drink the poison Acqua made and saw him fall to the ground, still and silent.Shortly after, the cult fell apart and Acqua's sheltered life was turned upside-down as authorities he'd never seen before came in and took the zealots away one-by-one. Confused, scared, and without a guiding force, Acqua simply bid as he was told by his step-mother and confessed to poisoning and subsequentially killing his father. He was then put into a children's institute for two years.

The Cold Streets of Ishgard

A court appointed lawyer took up Acqua's case, since the cultists and his step-mother (who never adopted him on paper, and therefore had no legal ties to the now twelve-year-old boy) had disappeared. The lawyer was a scruffy sort of man, that often took low paying cases because he believed in the righteousness of the law. Acqua's case was a particular interest to him, so he put in all his efforts to clear the kid's name for manipulation of adults for the many years of his youth that lead him to do what he did to his father.Which worked. Acqua was let out of juvenile prison but now he had nowhere to go. Having been brought up in one isolating situation then tossed into the barred routines of prison, Acqua was suddenly on the streets of a city that was too big for him to comprehend and no life skills.Acqua stumbled into a small group of homeless youths and discovered he could sell his body or the use of his mouth in the alley for enough gil to buy himself food.This was why he spent much of his youth in and out of juvenile hall, for petty theft and sexual solicitation. The lawyer always came to his defense, but he could never get Acqua to go on a different path. Acqua's own self-loathing didn't think he should better himself.The lawyer's wife didn't like Acqua, or the fact that her husband took on smaller cases to help those in need rather than tried to climb the political ladder. The friendship between Acqua and the lawyer severed assistance completely when Acqua offered him a poison to silence her. They have a verbal fight over morals and worth.That was when he realized that he had no one in his court to back him up, and he just destroyed the one, real friendship he had.That was when he decided to finally take the lawyer's advice and he picked up a job at an apothecary.

Toxic Bloom

With his years in and out of prison, the only legitimate job Acqua could find that catered to his skills was a ratty old apothecary down a back alley. It was run by an elderly woman with a cranky, no-nonsense attitude and a few scars along her wrinkled body. She was strict with Acqua, and often watched him without an ounce of trust, but she needed help and Acqua obviously knew his way around herbs.From ages sixteen to nineteen, Acqua endured her less-than-kindly snarking at his face in exchange of a place to lay his head and a very small stipend. They were both rude to each other, always tossing abrasive quips and snarling about the work, but at the end of the day they would still sip tea and play chess in the backroom.It came to a point where the apothecary shop owner became almost maternal to Acqua, if in a roundabout way. Neither one of them knew how to love, yet they found comfort in each other's company. The old woman talked a bit about her wayward son, who abandoned her and how Acqua was already a better son to her because he actually did his job.And his job went very well, for being such a sorry excuse for a shop. Acqua's vast knowledge of the wares and it's uses and his pretty, handsome looks brought in a lot of new customers. Eventually, the shop owner allowed Acqua to sell health potions on the side.But as skilled with healing and potions as Acqua was, he couldn't keep the elder's heath up for eternity. She passed quietly one random night, and no one took responsibility of her remains. He had her cremated and used her ashes in a flowerpot as an equally symbolic and thoughtless way to her memory, just as their friendship had been.For six months after her passing, he ran the shop alone. No one came to collect the establishment, and Acqua simply took over. He was just starting to build up the store from an apothecary into a proper potion's shop when the old shop owner's son came waltzing in.He was tall, and arrogant, and, to Acqua's eyes, a dashing young man that oozed confidence. They vaguely knew each other; the young man was a pimp and Acqua, the former street bed boy and thief. The son demanded the shop and was going to sell it off, as it was his right to his mother's estate. And Acqua, having nowhere else to go, offered a bargain.With his skills in potion mastery, he offered to help the two-bit pimp build up his empire in drug trafficking. He would produce luxury drug in exchange for the continued use of the shop.The bargain was struck, and the flirting game began. Acqua would create the best drugs of various kinds at the pimp's request. He would then give him the recipe for his own minions to mass produce. This was also the beginning of a long and toxic affair between the two of them.Acqua had a strong craving for affection, and the pimp didn't mind bedding the beautiful, talented youth. Even if Acqua wasn't one of his girls he employed, there was still a lingering feeling that as long as Acqua was useful to him, he'd keep him satisfied in the fantasy of lust.Soon, the former-pimp-turned-drug-lord's reputation skyrocketed through the underbelly of Ishgard. Acqua's drugs were an addictive hit, and the drug lord's treatment of Acqua turned violent and dismissive. Yet, Acqua couldn't quit him; the drug lord kept him feeling wanted even through the sharp jabs, the black eyes, and the assaults because Acqua was desperate for the attention.This eventually drove Acqua to become addicted to some of his own drugs, when testing turned to comfort, turned to him finding strangers in his bed and the drug lord leering gleefully at a sack full of gil.This went on for several years; Acqua ran a legitimate yet run down potions shop by day, and brewed up new drug recipes in the back. Then, would take what little pleasure he was allotted through a drug haze from the drug lord.Until the day the drug lord's arrogance got him caught up by authorities. Acqua's potion shop was raided and, in his love and devotion, and the inability to know his zealot nature came from the cult of his childhood, he confessed to crimes that were not his in order to keep the drug lord's name from their lists.

The End of an Era, the Start of a New

Five years of prison put Acqua into a similar routine from his youth. He kept his head down, his mouth shut, and knew better than to speak up. No one bothered him, and he was so lackluster that the few men that tried to connect with him found him unappealingly cold, like a lifeless fish not even worth the efforts.Not once did the drug lord visit him, and all the while Acqua continued to hold a torch for him. The man he sacrificed his freedom for, he expected loved him in his own twisted way, and Acqua was determined to protect him and his gang despite the authority's attempts to get him to give names.Until one day an unscheduled visitor showed up. He was tall and handsome, with brown hair and nerdy glasses. He word tweed and smiled sweetly. And he looked vaguely familiar to Acqua.His name was Professor Laure Sombremont, and through a recent trial of blood samples he had discovered that they were half-brothers through their father.It was through their shared stories did they realize that their father used to be apart of the Ishgard knighthood. A mission took him undercover into Garlemald, where he spent a night with a lady-for-hire (Laure's mother). On this mission, his views were twisted from what he saw in the Garlean territory. Upon his return, he created his isolating cult in the cold highlands outside of Ishgard's prying eyes and from where he later had Acqua.From here, something changed in Acqua; his frozen heart began to chip away at each time his brother came to visit. Warmth began to thaw his cold, blue eyes and finally, he allowed himself kinship with this long lost brother. It was also from their many visits that Laure learned of Acqua's past and why he was holding so steadfastly to an abusive lover. He turned Acqua to seek therapy and, eventually, Acqua began to understand the devastation of his toxic view of love and devotion.Finally, he gave up the name of the drug lord and his gang leaders, as well as other pretendant information that would take them down, in exchange for his freedom as he'd served enough for his own part in the bigger crime ring.Laure quickly took up Acqua under his wing, and helped him buy a cottage next door to him and his husband's home in Limsa. Acqua, having never been outside the cold lands of Coerthas, found the world looking bright and new.With the help of his new, real family, Acqua resettled to opening a small, legitimate potion's shop overlooked by his brother (and authorities). He cannot safely return to the streets of Ishgard, less some of the gang are still around, but he had found himself without wanting to return.
